So I came across this really exciting new offering from Royal Enfield recently. Its called the “MiY – Make-It-Yours” initiative. and it allows you to customise your ride on their website right at the time of purchase and get your spanking new bike, customised to your taste and preferences, directly from the factory itself.
Now, this is a completely new concept in the Indian motorcycle industry. How much customisation is possible, and how easy is it.. let’s find out!!
The configurator option can be found on on the Royal Enfield website here. Choose your state and city to begin.
It starts by letting you choose the bike you want to customise. As of now, you can only customise the two 650 offerings (that’s the Interceptor or Continental GT for the uninitiated). The Himalayan, Classic 350 and the Bullet 350 are still not being offered for customisation.
Let’s try configuring the Interceptor 650 and see how this works..
Click ‘Configure Now’ to proceed. The configurator is divided into 3 main sections; Style, Comfort and Protection.
In the Style section, you can choose any of the 6 colour options available, touring mirrors and miscellaneous accessories including different bar end kits, intake cover kit and heel guard.
I love the way that every customisation part you choose is displayed in 3D and the price at the top right corner keeps increasing with every addition in the cart.
Heading onto the Comfort Section, two options are available. You can choose the Touring seat and the Tall / Short flyscreen kit.
Going onto the last section, Protection. It offers 2 sizes of Engine Guards in 2 finishes and an Aluminium Sumpguard.
And that’s it with the customiser options.
In the next stage, RE offers Value Added services including AMC, Extended warranty for 4th and 5th year and RSA for 2nd and 3rd year.
The Gold AMC claims to cover Preventive maintenance and Wear & Tear parts, whereas the Silver AMC covers only Preventive maintenance. Both include parts, lubes and labour.
Once you have chosen your preferred VA services, you can choose the preferred dealer where you want the bike delivered. Lastly, after putting in your details and choosing whether want financial facility (RE provides option of 6 Financing companies / Banks), you get the summary screen of your bike and configuration.
The bike can be booked by paying Booking Amount of Rs. 10,000 immediately online. You proceed to pay and that’s it.. you have completed your RE Customiser process. Now just get ready to have the spanking new bike delivered at your chosen dealer.
After going through this process, I realise that all the customiser options are already available with the dealer. You can easily book the bike and ask the dealer to put the required accessories at the time of delivery. Plus, you can also get the VA services from the dealer. The prices of the products and services also seem to be same as that offered by the dealer. So there aren’t any online exclusive accessory or deals.
On the other hand, there can be cases when the dealer dosen’t have some accessories in stock. In such cases, its good to have all accessories fitted from the factory itself.
In conclusion, during COVID times, this is a very useful way to know the customisation options available for creating your dream bike, without spending hours at the showroom. To some, it might seem like a gimmicky promotion activity by RE to gather attention. But the advantages, such as seeing how every accessory will look on the bike, having the full choice of accessories and price information at your fingertips is difinitely adding value to the purchasing process of the buyer.
Royal Enfield seems to be taking the two-wheeler market into the correct direction with this initiative and kudos to them for this.
Would I customise my bike and book it online? Absolutely.
